Babalonia, Atkinos

Babalonia is a unique site; it is not a town proper. It is a religious center with only a few clerics and priests as permanent inhabitants.

Inspiration Begins Here

Babalonia was established as a permanent, non-residential settlement on the northern shore of Schulmania (the continent) in the early phase of exploration. Located east of the site where land was discovered (between Old Schulmania and Babalonia) the religious site has an outsized importance compared to its permanent population of 163 priests and clerics.  Initially a small complex of religious structures accompanying the massive worship center, the site shifted eastward when the harbor silted up,  leading to a reconfiguration of the site. Some structured were abandoned for centuries in the new arrangement, leading to picturesque ruins interspersed in the heavily used complex.

The site was originally intended to serve settlers in the southern islands and along the Schulmania shore who were unable to regularly make trips to Schulmanicus for services. Over time, Babalonia became a destination for religious pilgrims from all over, including those on Schulmanicus. The imposing and ancient edifices offer manifold opportunities for worship and reflection.  As the site is not a fully functional town with municipal services and a full-time population, thee is no mayor or city council. Instead, the area is operated as an ecclesiastical enclave with appointed administrators from the church offices in Temple Terrace.

Babalonia was the first religious center built outside of Schulmanicus. It has both ancient and more modern sites.

The stepped pyramid of the Babalonia Worship Center is the largest  religious structure in Schulmania.
