Seat of the Council of Lake George |
|
Georgehampton is the largest of the four original settlements in Devonshire which ringed Lake George. Originally capital of the Council of Lake George area, Georgehampton has become the capital of the Devonshire district and served as the original seat of government for Princess Shelby. The town sits along the southern shore of the lake and is divided into two halves: the east end and west end. The east end is primarily residential and is home to Devonia College and the Collin Health Center. The west end is mixed use and is the site of Government House. The town has gained a reputation as a nature lover’s destination, for both the scenic bluffs on the north side of town overlooking the lake as well as the rolling woodlands which surround it provide many recreational venues for residents. Georgehampton is a quietly elegant place, with many Lake Style buildings blending together harmoniously, often made from locally harvested wood and locally fired brick, allowing the natural colors of the natural environment to blend with the built environment. The town remains compact—even Princess Shelby has resisted calls to build herself a palace for fears it would unnecessarily enlarge the town’s footprint in an ecologically sensitive area.
