Smightower, Schulmanicus

The town of Smightower occupies a strategic corner of the home island of Schulmanicus. It is home to the busiest port and is the starting place for exploration voyages which discovered Atkinos and Tenne.

Where Great Discoveries Start

Smightower is a town which grew out of the first pushes for exploration in Schulmania. True to its origins, Smightower has served as a beacon for explorers ever since. A light tower was erected on what was once a remote corner of the island of Schulmanicus, to aid in circumnavigating the island once the feat had been done by Admiral Hestorb. This outpost quickly became home to a burgeoning town whose economy was based off of provisioning ships for discovery and commerce.

An innovation in the plan for the hillside coastal town was the development of an open air plaza at the center. The compact design of Schulminion towns had not, up to this point, created an open public space. Here, a plaza was created, centering on a statue of mythological hero Schulmanicus Rex. Surrounded by civic and commercial buildings in addition to the town well,  this plaza served as an example which was often duplicated in newer towns across the nation.

An interesting architectural note about the town is the contrasting use of Temple Style civic and commercial structures with the predominantly Stick Style residential and small commercial buildings.  This old town was built in a transitional era and features elements of both throughout.  Newer buildings on the town’s periphery are generally larger but continue to echo these themes in their compatible designs.

Smightower was built around this light tower, contrasted to aid in ancient navigation.
